Maintaining Your Carpet

Do you dread cleaning your carpet? Maybe you spilled some wine last week that left a stain. Or the rug just smells odd. Maintaining carpets takes time and effort.

You cannot just vacuum and call it done. Spilled food, pet-related accidents, and the gradual accumulation of dirt, dust, and grease mean it must be cleaned thoroughly.

Do you need professional carpet and upholstery cleaning? Kansas City’s Extra Hands Services are reliable professionals that you should hire for the job.

Do you want to know how you can maintain your carpets so they look new and clean? Here are seven tips you can follow.

1. Use Salt to Fix Food Stains

It’s easy, inexpensive, and can remove even the most stubborn oil stains. Mix salt and alcohol in a 1:4 ratio, and rub them over the stains. If you spill something less permanent such as wine, and the spill is fresh, blot first and then pour out salt. Let the salt sit for a while as it absorbs the wine, and then vacuum it. This carpet maintenance hack also applies to stains from other food items.

2. Baking Soda

This is a standalone hack. You don’t need much else to remove greasy stains and smudges. Apply baking soda generously to the stained area. The soda will absorb the oil and grease, and then you can remove it. You can further clean the area.

Note that this hack works best if you quickly tend to the stains. Don’t wait for a week to fix the problem.

3. Vacuum and Brush

Vacuuming is a fairly common strategy. It’s not a hack but rather a must. But you can improve the results of vacuuming by using a toothbrush. You can use toothbrushes to capture dirt and dust from areas where vacuum cleaners cannot reach.

Also, use them to apply baking soda or vinegar on stains to scrub away strains gently.

4. Shaving Cream

It works exceptionally well on light-colored carpets saving you from the trouble of replacing your previous one even if it has a nasty, greasy, red-colored stain right in the middle.

Vacuum your rug, blot the stain, and apply shaving cream on top of it. Wait for a few minutes and wipe the cream. You can use a sponge or clean cloth and see the stain significantly reduced.

5. Use Club Soda

Club soda is a carbonated drink that you can use to deal with coffee and urine stains. After the accidental urination (kids and pets cannot be controlled) or coffee spill, act fast and blot the area. Use a cloth, sponge, or paper towel that will absorb the spilled contents.

Generously spray or soak the area with club soda. You can wash the carpet using carpet shampoo afterward and vacuum it.

6. Water-Vinegar and Ironing

Make a solution of water and iron in a ratio of 3: 1. Apply it to the stain, and let it be for several minutes. Place a towel over the stained area and then iron on top of it. The heat, pressure, and mixture work together to remove the stain. Your towel will absorb the spill, and you can easily wash it afterward.

7. Lint Roller

For carpets with long hair, vacuums may be unable to get to all the dust particles and crumbs. Like a toothbrush, you can slide a lint roller in the deep areas and clean your carpet effectively.
